Healthy Bowel Movement

What is a healthy bowel movement? Many people spend their time trying not to think about their toilet visits – let’s face it it’s not the most pleasant of experiences - and so it is not surprising that most of us do not know what is normal. In fact there is no such thing as normal; but there are levels that make a “healthy” bowel movement. Remember every one is different so it is just a guideline.

Size and Shape of a Healthy Bowel Movement

Your stool should be soft and easy to pass, though some people do have harder or softer feces than others. It should be brown, formed and have a texture similar to toothpaste, or peanut butter. The size and shape should resemble that of a sausage.

Frequency of a Healthy Bowel Movement

Many people believe that the definition of a normal or healthy bowel movement is having one movement each day; but that is not true for everyone.

There is no rule for frequency of bowel movements, but the general range is from three times a day to three times a week. Less than three movements a week may indicate constipation, and more than three watery stools a day could indicate diarrhea.
