What is a Gritty / Abrasive Bowel Movement?

An uncomfortable bowel movement often accompanied by the sensation of scraping or scratching – similar to the texture of sand paper.

What Causes Gritty/Abrasive Bowel Movements?

A ‘gritty’ stool is often the result of high fiber, or indigestible foods such as nuts, wheat and fiber. If you do not chew your food properly, or eat things usually considered inedible then they will cause hard matter in your bowels.

Cure for Gritty / Abrasive Bowel Movements

Try to avoid too many high fiber foods – everything in moderation. Although fiber is generally good for your digestion; too much can do more harm than good.

A good idea is to try to remember the correlation between the state of your stool and what you have eaten recently. If you ate a bag of peanuts the night before and then suffered a sandpaper-like stool then you know that perhaps eating the entire bag was a bit over the top.

Chewing your food properly will also help, and not eating anything inappropriate will also aid the matter. Swallowing a handful of pennies is not a good idea.

If the causes cannot be attributed to your diet then consult a physician.
