What is a Dark Bowel Movement?
Any feces that is darker than usual. Most ‘dark’ human feces is the color of dark chocolate; or sometimes even black.
What Causes a Dark Bowel Movement?
Dark colored foods, iron supplements, certain medications or minerals are the most likely cause for dark stools.
It is helpful to remember that stool becomes darker the longer it waits to be excreted. So if you have suffered from constipation, or simply haven’t attribute enough time in the day for a decent bowel movement, then it is likely to be the cause of darker than usual fecal matter.
If you have not eaten anything or used any medication that could be attributed to the abnormal darkness, then consult a physician as the black color could be caused by blood; commonly known as “Melena.”
Curing Dark Bowel Movement
If the problem persists and cannot be attributed to food or medication then consult a physician.
Otherwise a close look at your diet and lifestyle should be enough to reveal the cause and change for the better. Taking time out in your day to excrete a proper bowel movement will help. This is important - compacted fecal matter can be potentially harmful.
