Adult Bowel Movement

An adult bowel movement can be large, small, soft or hard; and a variety of different colors, textures and aromas.

Normal Adult Bowel Movement

There is no such thing as normal – every adult is different. However the guidelines say that the average adult bowel movement should be “cardboard brown”, the texture of toothpaste or peanut butter, and around the size and shape of a sausage. Frequency will vary but anything less than 3 or 4 times a week; or anything more than 3 or 4 times a day may be cause for concern.

Diet is a big factor in your bowel movement – what you eat ultimately decides the type of bowel movement you have. So before wondering why your stools don’t seem to fit into the “average” category review what you have been eating recently and try to correlate it with the resulting feces. Once in a while you will have an abnormal stool for no apparent reason – and as long as it does not persist it is no real cause for concern.

Problems with Adult Bowel Movement

If you are having problems such as abnormal coloring, texture, smells or you are experiencing pain with your bowel movements then it is best to get it checked out with your doctor.

Many things are diet or lifestyle related and can be easily rectified; but some are health related and ought to be diagnosed by a physician.
